SPORTY STYLING

Guys love sport and all the paraphernalia that goes with it but, even for the World Cup, wearing that hi-tech rugby shirt is only acceptable on the field. Wear it on the weekend and you'll look like a Bloemfontein Bergie. Avoid ostentatious logos (Bulls, Sharks etc.) and synthetic fibres (Pirates and Chiefs fans especially). Rather impress her with sport influenced styling, like retro tennis stripes or badge detailing. Go for bright colours like primary green, red and loads of blue paired of jeans or cargo pants and sneakers.

COLOUR CODES

Be careful to choose clothing colours that work for you. Shades that are too close to your skin tone tend to wash you out. Tanned or olive skin looks best with contrasting bright colours and whites. Soft pastels and earth tones add an appealing creaminess to fair skin tones. Here's a tip that women notice and love: wear a shirt that matches your eye colour.

CHOOSING A FRAGRANCE

Typically, a daytime scent is subtle, fresh and upbeat - often including ingredients like citrus, basil, coriander and rosemary. While an evening fragrance is heavier, perhaps more sensual and exotic. Tobacco, chocolate, coffee, cedar and sandalwood, amber and musk are popular ingredients for these stronger scents.

TO CHUCK OR NOT TO CHUCK - WHAT NOT TO WEAR

Keep only the best fashion pieces from each season, those well-made quality items that you spent a little more on. Toss anything that doesn’t fi t or has holes in it, odds are it’s not likely to fit you 10 years down the line and if you haven’t bothered to mend it yet it says a lot about the item. Another good guideline to consider is have you worn it in the last year - if not, stow it or throw it.

A WATCH SHOULD BE DISCREET

It should go with everything. If it doesn’t, you’re going to need a selection of watches, something sporty for weekends or casual occasions, a leather-strapped watch (brown or black) for sophisticated elegance and a metal-link watch, which is suitable for most occasions.

AVOID LOOKING LIKE A SHOP WINDOW MANNEQUIN

It’s fun to wear things that are “of the moment”. Just not everything all at once. The true genius in style is to combine classic pieces with contemporary high-fashion elements.

DON'T GET HIGHLIGHTS

Unless you are really handsome. Actually don’t even do it if you are handsome. The Eighties are over and the Wham-look went with them.
